A small medieval Eastern Orthodox church perched on a cliff west of Asenovgrad in south central Bulgaria, the Church of St John the Baptist dates to the 12th–14th centuries and exemplifies Byzantine architecture in the region. Its exterior is distinguished by numerous blind arches, while the interior preserves mostly 18th-century frescoes alongside fragments of 14th-century murals. The building's elevated position and arrowslits on the north wall suggest it served a dual purpose, functioning not merely as a place of worship but also as a defensive outpost. Known locally as Sveti Yani or Sveti Yan, it remains a modest but strategically significant example of medieval Orthodox ecclesiastical architecture.
