Nestled within Asen's Fortress in the Rhodope Mountains near Asenovgrad, Bulgaria, the Church of the Holy Mother of God is a Byzantine medieval structure built most likely in the 12th century. The church features a distinctive two-story layout, with the upper story serving as the church proper and the lower story of uncertain purpose. A rectangular tower rises above the narthex—regarded as the earliest preserved example of its kind in the Balkans. Fragments of frescoes survive on the walls of the upper story, offering glimpses of its original decoration.
