Situated on the northern peninsula of Nesebar, a UNESCO World Heritage town in Bulgaria, this Byzantine basilica was built in the 6th century and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the epithet "Eleusa"—meaning "the Tender" in Byzantine Greek. Originally part of a monastery complex, the church functioned until the 14th century, when it is presumed to have been destroyed by earthquake. Measuring 28 meters long and 18 meters wide, the structure features three naves, three apses, and a narthex, with two additional smaller apses on its north and south sides. After portions of the northern section and central nave had subsided into the sea, excavations began in 1920, and the basilica has since been carefully preserved and partially restored.
