Located in the village of Berende in westernmost Bulgaria, the Church of St Peter (also known as the Church of Saints Peter and Paul) is a small medieval Orthodox church most likely built and decorated in the 14th century. Its simple stone architecture belies its interior richness: the church contains a number of remarkable frescoes. Situated near the village graveyard, it has long been interpreted as a cemetery church, though a now-lost portrait on its exterior walls—bearing a caption likely referencing Bulgarian tsar Ivan Alexander—suggests it may have held connections to the Bulgarian royal court.
