City Gate, located at the entrance to Valletta, Malta, is the fifth gateway to occupy this strategically significant site. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and completed in 2014, it replaced a Rationalist structure that had stood since 1964. The present gate marks the culmination of nearly five centuries of architectural evolution at this location, beginning with Porta San Giorgio, built in 1569 to designs attributed to Francesco Laparelli or Girolamo Cassar. Successive gates—rebuilt in 1633 under Tommaso Dingli and again in 1853—served as fortified components of Valletta's defensive walls and the city's sole landward approach. Piano's contemporary intervention transformed this historic threshold into a modern architectural statement while maintaining its role as the principal entrance to the fortified capital city.
