The Conjunto Governador Kubitschek, a historic mixed-use residential complex in the Santo Agostinho neighborhood of Belo Horizonte, was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1951 with structural engineering by Joaquim Cardozo during Juscelino Kubitschek's governorship of Minas Gerais. Located near Praça Raul Soares in the city's South-Central Region, the International Style complex comprises two large residential blocks: Block A with 23 floors and Block B with 36 floors, the latter serving as one of central Belo Horizonte's most prominent vertical landmarks. Housing 1,086 apartments for approximately 5,000 residents, the complex exemplifies an unusually ambitious modernist program that integrates residential space with government offices, shops, restaurants, hotels, recreation and cultural facilities. Though some components were reduced or left incomplete, it remains a distinctive example of housing planned in concert with commerce and urban services. The complex was officially designated municipal cultural heritage in 2022, recognition reflecting its architectural significance, role in Belo Horizonte's high-rise housing development, and enduring presence as one of the city's most recognizable modernist buildings.
