Pampulha is an administrative region occupying 47 square kilometers in northeast Belo Horizonte, Brazil, centered on an artificial lake created in the early 1940s. Under Mayor Juscelino Kubitschek (who later served as president), the lakeside became the site of an ambitious modernist urban development project. Oscar Niemeyer, then a young architect, was commissioned to design a series of buildings, working alongside landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx and numerous artists to create what became the earliest and most significant example of Modernism in Brazil. The resulting Pampulha Modern Ensemble was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. Today the region comprises 29 neighborhoods and houses approximately 350,000 residents.
