Completed in 1943 in Belo Horizonte, the Pampulha Modern Ensemble is an urban project designed by Oscar Niemeyer around an artificial lake, Lake Pampulha. The ensemble comprises four principal structures: a casino (now the Pampulha Art Museum), the ballroom Casa do Baile, the Golf Yacht Club (now Iate Tênis Clube), and the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi. Niemeyer collaborated on the scheme with landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, structural engineer Joaquim Cardozo, and Brazilian Modernist artists. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016 for its outstanding examples of modern architecture and its pivotal role in establishing a distinctly Brazilian architectural identity, the ensemble is also protected as a cultural heritage asset by both IEPHA (the State of Minas Gerais) and IPHAN (Brazil's national heritage body).
