The Convent of Christ in Tomar, Portugal, is a former Catholic convent that evolved from a 12th-century Templar stronghold into a monument of Portuguese maritime heritage. Following the dissolution of the Templar order in the 14th century, the Portuguese branch was reconstituted as the Knights of the Order of Christ, which later became instrumental in supporting Portugal's voyages of discovery during the 15th century. Built in the Manueline architectural style, the complex represents both military and religious functions across centuries. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and recognized as a National Monument of Portugal, it stands as a remarkable testament to the intersection of crusading militarism, spiritual devotion, and the age of exploration.
