The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts in downtown Minneapolis is a performing arts complex that combines historic and contemporary facilities dedicated to dance and performing arts education. At its core is the refurbished 500-seat Goodale Theater (formerly the Sam S. Shubert Theater), a Beaux-Arts building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The center also incorporates the Hennepin Center for the Arts, housed in the former Minneapolis Masonic Temple and home to twenty leading dance and performing arts organizations. An atrium connects these buildings, which together include a state-of-the-art education studio that launched a distance learning program in 2002, using videoconferencing technology to bring artists into classrooms across Minnesota and beyond. Developed as an incubation project by Artspace Projects, Inc, the Cowles Center served as a catalyst for dance creation, presentation, and education in the Twin Cities, though it ceased operations in May 2024 due to financial challenges.
