Constructed in 1913, the Masonic Temple of Des Moines is a Beaux-Arts landmark designed by the Des Moines firm Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson. Originally configured with retail and office space on its first three floors and Masonic meeting rooms above, the building was recognized for its architectural significance and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Following the Masons' departure in 2001, the fourth-floor lodge rooms were repurposed as the Temple for Performing Arts, transforming the historic structure into a venue for performing arts, cultural entertainment, and education. It remains one of only two known lodge buildings designed by Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson.
