Located at 300 Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis, the Central Library is a 353,000-square-foot postmodern building designed by César Pelli and opened in 2006. Constructed from limestone, concrete, and glass and rising 105.29 meters, it serves as the largest library in the Hennepin County Library system and houses more than 2.4 million items, representing the third-largest per capita public library collection among major American cities. The building features two levels of underground parking, over 300 public computers, a soaring 8,140-square-foot atrium, and a distinctive 18,560-square-foot green roof planted with drought-resistant ground cover. Integrated energy-efficiency measures reflect contemporary sustainable design practices.
