The Wells Fargo Center at 90 South 7th Street in Minneapolis is the third-tallest building in the city, standing 774 feet (236 meters) high. Completed in 1988 and designed by César Pelli, it exemplifies postmodern architecture infused with modernized art deco styling, deliberately echoing nearby landmarks such as the CenturyLink Building and the Foshay Tower, and drawing inspiration from New York's 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Built on the site of the fire-damaged Northwestern National Bank Building (imploded in 1984), the structure originally was conceived as a taller 45-story tower with a square footprint; the halved site necessitated design modifications. Illuminated nightly by floodlights highlighting its upper floors, the building achieved recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2000 as one of the nation's 100 most energy-efficient buildings, and received the Urban Land Institute's Award for Excellence in Large Scale Office Development in 1989. Initially headquarters to Norwest Corporation (which merged with Wells Fargo in 1998), the building continues to house major regional operations alongside law and accounting firms.
