The Palacio de Cristal, a 19th-century conservatory in Madrid's Buen Retiro Park, stands as a masterwork of Victorian glass-and-iron architecture designed by Ricardo Velázquez Bosco and completed in 1887. Shaped like a Greek cross and rising over 22 metres high beneath its distinctive cupola, the structure is constructed almost entirely of glass set within an iron framework supported by a brick base adorned with ceramics. The cast-iron frame was manufactured in Bilbao. Its curved architecture draws inspiration from British pioneers Joseph Paxton and Decimus Burton, creators of London's Crystal Palace and the Palm House at Kew Gardens respectively. Originally one of the main venues for the 1887 Philippines Exposition, the building was designed to be dismantled and relocated, yet it has remained on its original site beside a lake. No longer functioning as a greenhouse, it has been restored and now serves as a gallery for art exhibitions, recognized as a bien de interés cultural.
