Charles Deering Memorial Library, Northwestern University's main library in Evanston, Illinois, opened in 1933 as a Collegiate Gothic structure designed by architect James Gamble Rogers. Constructed from Indiana limestone, granite, travertine, concrete, and sandstone, the 34-meter-tall building was financed by Charles Deering, a Northwestern benefactor and chairman of International Harvester. It served as the university's primary library until 1970, when the Northwestern University Main Library was completed. Today, Deering houses the Northwestern University Archives on its first floor, the Music Library on the second, and both the Art Collection and Special Collections Department on the third.
