Northwestern University Libraries, the academic library system of Northwestern University in Evanston, is anchored by a brutalist main building designed by Walter Netsch of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Completed in 1970 after construction began in 1966, the reinforced concrete structure rises 68 meters and succeeded Deering Library as the campus's primary library while remaining physically connected to its predecessor. The system ranks as the 14th-largest university library in North America, housing over 8.1 million printed and electronic volumes alongside extensive collections of maps, manuscripts, microforms, audio and video materials, and journals in both print and digital formats. The library joined the Google Book Search project in 2007.
