In the Spandau district of Berlin, Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed this war memorial in 1816 to commemorate those who fell during the Napoleonic Wars of 1813–15. Constructed from clinker brick, sandstone, and iron, and enriched with gold leaf detailing, the monument exemplifies Schinkel's neoclassical approach to commemorative architecture. Today recognized as both a cultural heritage monument and an architectural heritage monument in Berlin, it stands as an important early work in Schinkel's career and a significant testament to German memorialization practices in the post-Napoleonic era.
