The Domus Aurea (Latin for "Golden House") was a vast landscaped palace complex built by Emperor Nero on the Oppian Hill in central Rome following the great fire of 64 AD. Constructed as a replacement and expansion of his earlier Domus Transitoria, the complex represented an ambitious reorganization of the fire-damaged urban landscape into a private imperial estate. Though now known primarily through archaeological remains, the site attests to the scale and ambition of Roman imperial architecture in the first century AD.
