The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany, New York, is a sprawling complex of state government buildings designed by architect Wallace Harrison in the International Style and Brutalist aesthetic. Constructed between 1965 and 1976 at a cost of approximately $2 billion, the plaza integrates with the 1899 New York State Capitol to house various departments of state administration, including the Department of Health and the Biggs Laboratory of the Wadsworth Center. The site is distinguished by the Empire State Art Collection, a significant assemblage of monumental abstract artworks from the 1960s and 1970s displayed throughout the complex, and includes a performing arts facility managed by the Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza Performing Arts Center Corporation, established in 1979.
