Find out more
Engelszell Abbey, located near Engelhartszell in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria, was the last Trappist monastery in the country. Built in the Rococo style, the monastery operated as a community of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance until May 2023, when it was suppressed by the order due to dwindling numbers—only four monks remained, making it impossible to sustain the monastic life the Trappist tradition demands. The site is now listed among Austria's protected heritage objects.
