Artstetten Castle, a historic Schloss near the Wachau valley in Lower Austria, originated in 1253 and exemplifies historicist and Renaissance architectural styles. Located in the municipality of Artstetten-Pöbring, the castle achieved historical significance as the final resting place of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, whose assassinations in 1914 precipitated World War I. Today the castle functions as a museum and is listed among Austria's protected heritage objects.
