The Erkel Theatre in Budapest's District VIII is the city's largest theatre, boasting 1,819 seats and showcasing a blend of Art Nouveau and Art Deco architectural styles. For over seven decades beginning in 1951, it served as a secondary venue to the Hungarian State Opera House before transitioning to independent operation in September 2025. Under the direction of Vajk Szente, the theatre now operates as a standalone musical theatre on a repertory system, with the stated ambition to establish itself as Hungary's premier venue for musical theatre.
