Sited on the Evangelistas Islets off Chile's southern coast, this 13-meter lighthouse stands as one of the world's most exposed and isolated navigational aids, serving as the critical landfall light for ships approaching the Strait of Magellan from the Pacific. Built in 1896 by Scottish engineer George Henry Slight—recruited by President Jorge Montt to establish Chile's lighthouse service—the structure was a notable engineering feat of its era, completed despite formidable obstacles including violent weather, supply shortages, worker unrest, and disease among the mostly Croat and Chilote laborers. The lighthouse complex encompasses weather and telecommunications stations and remains a Historical Monument of Chile, though it is not open to the public. The site underwent restoration in 1995–96, when the original lantern was faithfully replicated to replace a fiberglass version.
