The First Baptist Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut, completed in 1893, stands as a distinctive local expression of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Designed by architect Joseph W. Northrop for a congregation established in 1837, the building exemplifies the robust stone forms and rounded arches characteristic of the Romanesque Revival style that flourished in late nineteenth-century America. Its presence on the National Register of Historic Places, where it was listed in 1990, reflects its significance as a well-preserved example of both regional ecclesiastical architecture and the work of a local designer.
