First Canadian Centre is a 41-storey office tower in downtown Calgary, Alberta, completed in 1982 and standing 167 metres tall. Designed by Donald C. Smith of the prestigious New York firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it represents the second SOM project in Calgary, following Toronto-Dominion Square on the neighbouring block to the south. The building was originally conceived as part of an ambitious dual-tower complex—a 41-storey and 64-storey structure connected by a banking hall—but the taller tower was abandoned due to the early 1980s recession. Built in the international and late modernist styles, the tower contains approximately 48,275 square metres of floor space and houses a major Bank of Montreal retail branch on its ground level.
