Standing at 111 North Higgins Avenue in downtown Missoula, Montana, the Florence Hotel is a seven-story Moderne-style building completed in 1941 and designed by Spokane architect G.A. Pehrson. The $600,000 structure rose on the site of two earlier Florence Hotels, the last of which had burned in 1936; despite the Great Depression, local businessman Walter H. McLeod and others secured community support for the ambitious rebuild. The hotel was distinguished by forward-thinking amenities including the Northwest's first central air conditioning system, novel glass shower doors, and underground parking. Its Art Moderne design and first-class interior appointments made it a regional landmark—famously hosting actor John Wayne—and a gathering place for visitors to Big Sky Country. Converted to office and retail use in the 1970s, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 and remains the fifth-tallest structure in Missoula.
