The General Motors Building is a 50-story International Style office tower completed in 1968 at 767 Fifth Avenue on the southeast corner of Central Park in Midtown Manhattan. Designed by Edward Durell Stone & Associates with Emery Roth & Sons, the 215-meter structure occupies an entire city block and replaced the former Savoy-Plaza Hotel. Its distinctive facade features vertical piers of white Georgia marble alternating with glass strips. The building comprises approximately 1.7 million square feet and originally housed a General Motors showroom in its lobby, later replaced by an FAO Schwarz department store. The public plaza on Fifth Avenue was originally below grade but was renovated to accommodate an Apple Fifth Avenue entrance above ground level. Despite early critical disapproval from prominent architecture reviewers, the building became a significant Manhattan landmark and has changed hands multiple times, with a joint venture led by Boston Properties currently owning it as of 2022.
