Metropolitan Tower stands at 146 West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, a 68-story mixed-use skyscraper completed in 1987 by SLCE Architects. Rising 218 meters, the postmodern building features a striking black-glass facade composed of a rectangular 18-story office base supporting a 48-story triangular residential tower, its pointed edge dramatically facing north toward 57th Street. Developed by Harry Macklowe, the tower comprises approximately 225,000 square feet of office space, designed as a single condominium, and 235 residential apartments in the upper stories. Located adjacent to Carnegie Hall Tower and separated only by the Russian Tea Room, Metropolitan Tower occupies a constrained site and includes street-level entrances connected by a passageway forming part of 6½ Avenue. Construction began in 1984, following Macklowe's acquisition of earlier low-rise buildings on the site.
