Times Square Tower, also known as 7 Times Square, is a 48-story postmodern office skyscraper designed by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 2004. Located at the southern end of Times Square in Midtown Manhattan, the 724-foot (221 m) tower occupies the city block bounded by Broadway, 42nd Street, Seventh Avenue, and 41st Street. The building's facade features a glass curtain wall with large billboards integrated into its lower stories, part of the broader 42nd Street Development Project. Its structural system employs shallow footings across most of the site, caissons where the plot abuts New York City Subway tunnels, and a steel superstructure with diagonal wind-resisting beams on its exterior. The building contains 1.2 million square feet of floor space, with retail and a subway station entrance occupying its lowest three stories and offices throughout. Developed by Boston Properties, the tower was initially conceived during the 1980s and early 1990s; construction began in 2001 following the successful completion of nearby Times Square towers but proceeded as a speculative development after the anchor tenant's cancellation.
