The Golden Gate Theater, a California Churrigueresque-style movie palace built in 1927 on Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles, represents a fine example of Mediterranean Revival architecture from cinema's golden age. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, the theater operated until its closure in 1986. The surrounding retail building was damaged in the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake and subsequently demolished in 1992, leaving the theater structure vacant for over two decades while preservationists and developers contested its fate. The building was eventually converted into a CVS Pharmacy and reopened to the public in 2012.
