Grace Episcopal Church in Medford, Massachusetts, was designed by the pioneering American architect H. H. Richardson and completed in 1869–one of his earliest works and the second of his churches to be built. Executed in a picturesque Gothic style with Richardsonian Romanesque elements, the church features a striking 90-foot square-based octagonal steeple, asymmetrical massing, and rough-cut walls of glacial boulder trimmed with granite, crowned by a dominant slate roof banded in red. Originally a private chapel after the Brooks family completed its funding in 1868, it was transferred to the parish and consecrated in 1873. The church houses a major stained glass window, "Rebecca at the Well," designed by the renowned artist John LaFarge and installed around 1884–85. The building has undergone extensive modifications since its completion, including a 1882 Sunday school annex and various interior redecorations, though LaFarge's window and the original pulpit remain from Richardson's conception.
