Great Captain Island Light stands 51 meters tall on Great Captain Island in western Long Island Sound off Greenwich, Connecticut. Built in 1868 to replace an earlier stone lighthouse that had deteriorated within a decade of its 1829 completion, the structure combines a granite dwelling with an attached cast-iron and stone lantern. It shares an identical design with contemporary lighthouses at Sheffield Island, Morgan Point, Old Field Point, Plum Island, and Block Island North. Originally equipped with a fog whistle (added 1890) and siren (added 1905), the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1970 when a skeletal tower took over its navigational role. After Greenwich acquired the property in 1973, the building fell into severe disrepair until a comprehensive restoration was completed in 2009, culminating in the activation of a non-navigational light in 2012. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
