Standing 15 meters tall on the northern tip of Roosevelt Island in the East River, the Blackwell Island Lighthouse is a Gothic Revival stone tower completed in 1872 by the New York City government under the design of architect James Renwick Jr. Originally named for the island's former owner, the lighthouse has also been known as Welfare Island Lighthouse and is now called Roosevelt Island Lighthouse. Situated within Lighthouse Park, the structure was recognized as a New York City Landmark in 1976 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
