The Round Island Light stands on the west shore of Round Island in Michigan's Straits of Mackinac, a critical passage connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Built in 1895 from brick and rising seventeen meters, this lighthouse was constructed to warn vessels of the island's hazard to navigation and to complement the other lights guiding ships through the straits. Its distinctive appearance—a red stone base topped with a wood tower—has earned it comparison to an old-fashioned schoolhouse, making it a readily recognizable landmark of the upper Great Lakes. Ferries bound for Mackinac Island pass it regularly, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
