The Great Colonnade at Palmyra was the principal colonnaded avenue of the ancient city, stretching for more than a kilometer through the Syrian Desert. Built in stages during the second and third centuries CE, this Roman architectural achievement connected the Temple of Bel at the city's southeastern end to the West Gate and Funerary Temple in the northwest. Constructed of stone, the colonnade was substantially damaged during the Syrian Civil War, particularly during the Islamic State's occupation from May 2015 to March 2016, though significant portions remain standing today.
