Located on Krystalgade in Copenhagen, the Great Synagogue is an Orthodox synagogue completed in 1833 by architect Gustav Friedrich Hetsch. Designed in Egyptian Revival style, it represents a distinctive approach to synagogue architecture during a period when classical and revived Greek and Roman styles dominated new construction. The building is particularly notable for its incorporation of Egyptian elements in the columns, ceiling, and cornice surrounding the Ark, making it one of only a few synagogues of its era to employ such ornamentation. The congregation itself dates to the 17th century, though this structure replaced an earlier synagogue completed in 1766. The Great Synagogue is registered as a monument with Denmark's cultural heritage authority.
