Guangxiao Temple in Guangzhou is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in China, serving historically as a crucial stopover for Asian missionary monks and a major center for propagating multiple Buddhist traditions, including Chan, Zen, Shingon, and Pure Land schools. The temple holds particular significance as the site where Huineng, the sixth patriarch of Chan Buddhism, delivered his first public lecture and underwent tonsure, and where Shingon master Amoghavajra introduced esoteric Buddhist teachings. Numerous Buddhist scriptures were translated within its walls, among them works by the translator Yijing and the Shurangama-sūtra rendered by Paramitiin. Today it is recognized as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
