Built in the sixth century as a Byzantine basilican church, Hagia Sophia in İznik (ancient Nicaea) stands in the town centre within the old walled area of this Bursa Province settlement. Following the Ottoman conquest, it was converted into the Orhan Mosque, reflecting the region's shifting religious and political control. The structure was repurposed as a museum in 1935 before resuming active service as a mosque in recent times, embodying layers of Byzantine and Ottoman architectural tradition in a single edifice.
