Hagia Sophia in Trabzon, northeastern Turkey, is a thirteenth-century Byzantine church built when the city served as capital of the Empire of Trebizond. Situated near the seashore, two miles west of the medieval town's limits, it stands as one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture surviving in the region. Following Mehmed II's conquest of Trabzon in 1461, the church was converted into a mosque. The building later became a museum in 1964 before being reconverted to a mosque in 2013, reflecting the shifting religious and cultural uses of this significant medieval structure.
