Built in 1904 for James Hartness, a machine factory owner who would later serve as Governor of Vermont, the Hartness House in Springfield represents one of Vermont's relatively rare examples of high-style Shingle style architecture. Located at 30 Orchard Street, the residence exemplifies the refined residential design of the early twentieth century and was recognized for its architectural significance when listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Today it operates as a small hotel.
