Completed in 1993 in Casablanca, Morocco, the Hassan II Mosque is the second largest mosque in Africa and one of the world's largest, designed by French architect Michel Pinseau under the direction of King Hassan II. Built by Moroccan artisans from across the kingdom, the structure exemplifies Moorish architecture with handcrafted marble walls and intricate zellige tilework executed by hundreds of master craftsmen. Its minaret rises 210 metres (689 feet)—the world's second tallest—crowned by a laser whose light points toward Mecca. The mosque's remarkable setting on a promontory overlooking the Atlantic Ocean allows worshippers to pray facing the sea, while a retractable roof and vast courtyards accommodate up to 105,000 people: 25,000 within the main prayer hall and 80,000 in the exterior grounds.
