Designed by Carl Ludvig Engel and completed in 1826, the Old Church of Helsinki is an Evangelical Lutheran wooden structure in Neoclassical style, making it the oldest existing church in central Helsinki. Originally conceived as a temporary solution when the 1727 Ulrika Eleonora Church exceeded capacity and before Helsinki Cathedral's completion in 1852, the building gained permanence as the city's rapid early-nineteenth-century population growth sustained the need for its services and spurred construction of additional churches throughout Helsinki. Today protected by city plan designation and church heritage status, it stands as a modest yet enduring testament to the capital's ecclesiastical history.
