Built between 1974 and 1979 in Sofia's upscale Lozenets neighbourhood, Hotel Marinela Sofia is a 21-storey luxury hotel designed by renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. Originally constructed as the Vitosha New Otani by the Japanese New Otani Hotels chain—a joint project between Bulgarian firm Tehnoeksportstroy and Mitsubishi—the hotel blends Eastern and Western architectural traditions, with Kurokawa drawing design inspiration from Bulgaria's National Revival style evident in towns like Koprivshtitsa and Plovdiv. The five-star property contains 442 guest rooms, ten conference rooms, four restaurants, two bars, and a nightclub. Its most distinctive feature is the only Japanese garden in the Balkans, a large-scale recreation of the garden at the original Hotel New Otani in Tokyo, complete with a traditional Japanese house and lake.
