The Hotel Paso del Norte is a historic 351-room hotel in Chicago School style, located in El Paso, Texas, less than one mile north of the Mexican border. Designed by the architectural firm Trost & Trost and financed by wealthy businessman Zack T. White, the hotel opened on Thanksgiving Day 1912 at a cost of $1.5 million, constructed to be one of El Paso's sturdiest and most ornate structures. After witnessing a hotel fire in El Paso, White and architect Henry Charles Trost traveled to San Francisco to study how buildings survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, applying those lessons to the hotel's fireproof design. The building's most distinctive feature is its expansive lobby, crowned by a stained glass dome over forty-five feet in diameter executed in Tiffany glass style. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the hotel underwent substantial renovation and reopened in October 2020 as part of Marriott's Autograph Collection. Throughout its history, it has hosted numerous U.S. Presidents, entertainers, and celebrities, and during the 1914 Mexican Revolution, its rooftop terraces offered views of firefights between revolutionaries and the Mexican Army.
