Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1921, the Hove War Memorial stands on Grand Avenue in this south-coast town, commemorating over 600 local men lost in the First World War. Lutyens's design comprises a Tuscan column rising from a three-staged base and crowned with a statue of Saint George, the patron saint of England, cast in the studio of Sir George Frampton. The saint holds a sword by its blade in one hand and a shield in the other—a figure type that Frampton employed on several of Lutyens's other war memorials. The base bears dedicatory inscriptions, while the names of the dead are recorded on plaques housed in the town's library. Unveiled on 27 February 1921 by Lord Leconfield in the architect's absence, the memorial is now Grade II listed.
