Located at 6 Appleton Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Howe House is a 2½-story wood-frame residence built in 1887 by the architectural firm Cabot & Chandler for Lois Lillie (White) Howe, widow of Dr. Estes Howe. Designed in the Shingle style with Queen Anne elements, the house gained historical significance through its association with Lois Lilley Howe, the younger resident who became one of the first female graduates of MIT's architectural program and the first woman to achieve fellowship in the American Institute of Architects. After establishing her career, Howe undertook substantial alterations to the house in 1907, 1910, 1916, and 1935. She occupied the residence from her youth until 1963, a year before her death. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
