Completed in 1935 on Capitol Avenue in Pierre, the Hughes County Courthouse represents a streamlined interpretation of 1930s modernism. Designed by architects Hugill & Blatherwick, the building employs a largely minimalist aesthetic characteristic of the Moderne style while incorporating Art Deco flourishes—notably spandrels with patterned brickwork that punctuate the facade's vertical fenestration. Built to replace an 1883 courthouse, it exemplifies the design approach favored for public buildings during this era. The courthouse was recognized as a historic place on the National Register in 1993.
