Humes Preparatory Academy Middle School in Memphis, Tennessee, stands as a Collegiate Gothic structure designed by noted architect George Awsumb. Originally opening as L. C. Humes High School in the 1930s, it operated in that capacity through 1967 before transitioning to junior high and later middle school status within the Memphis City Schools district. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, recognized for both its architectural significance and its importance to Memphis education. The school has notable historical connections, including being the alma mater of Elvis Presley, who graduated in 1953. Since 2012 it has functioned as a charter school; control transferred to Frayser Community Schools in 2017 after its previous charter operator, Gestalt Community Schools, departed due to enrollment and funding challenges.
