The Mausoleum of Ruhollah Khomeini, located south of Tehran in the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery, is a monumental Shi'ite Islamic shrine rising 91 meters and constructed of marble and concrete. Built beginning in 1989 following Khomeini's death that June, the mausoleum houses the tombs of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, his wife Khadijeh Saqafi, his second son Ahmad Khomeini, and several prominent political figures including former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. The mausoleum anchors an expansive 2,000-hectare funerary complex incorporating a cultural center, university for Islamic studies, seminary, shopping mall, parking for 20,000 vehicles, and a branch of Iran's National Museum. Construction, which took over 35 years to complete, reportedly received US$2 billion in government investment. The site functions as a major pilgrimage destination and hosts annual commemorations of Khomeini's death on 4 June, attended by government officials, foreign ambassadors, and dignitaries from abroad.
