The Ioannina Castle is the fortified old town of Ioannina in northwestern Greece, originally established in 1378 as a Byzantine fortress. Though its present form derives largely from reconstruction undertaken by Ali Pasha during the late Ottoman period, the structure incorporates pre-existing Byzantine architectural elements, creating a layered monument to successive periods of Greek history. Today it stands as an archaeological site within Greece's protected heritage.
